Dr Babu Sevagram (MBBS, MD, FRAZCP) is trained in Psychiatry and highly experienced in Developmental Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry. His initial training was at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), a centre of excellence in mind & brain sciences in India. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists since 2002.
He has extensive experience in assessing and managing neuropsychiatric conditions in youth, adults and the aged. Since 2007 he has served as Senior Staff Specialist in Neuropsychiatry Services at Newcastle. This unique and highly specialized clinical service was recently awarded the Clinical Team of the Year in the Hunter and New England Health District.
Dr Sevagram has particular interest in managing organic brain disorders presenting as treatment resistant psychiatric conditions including psychosis, depression and anxiety. He is experienced in managing emotional, behavioural and cognitive disturbances associated with traumatic brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, hydrocephalus (NPH), Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Disease. Young onset dementia, psychogenic seizures and movement disorders.
Assessment and management of adults with ADHD, Autism and Tourette’s Syndrome has formed significant part of his clinical work in the past five years. These neurodevelopmental conditions often associated with childhood can continue to significantly disturb emotional and social functioning in adulthood. He also serves on the staff of Disability Assessment Services at St George’s Hospital as Senior Staff Psychiatrist. He has extensive experience working with disability support teams, care-givers and psychologists in the management of complex behavioural and emotional problems in adolescents and adults with Intellectual Disability, Autism, and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
